Writing Centers Around the World
The Write Space at ADA University, Baku, Azerbaijan
ADA University is Azerbaijan’s first English-medium public university, which grew from Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy, a training school for diplomats. Founded in 2012, the mission of the Write Space is to foster a strong university-wide English writing community by providing individual support and organizing workshops and other writing-related events.
Academic Writing Education at Ashoka University, India — A Close Look at the YIF Critical Writing Program
Just two decades ago, there was relatively much less academic writing instruction at the higher education level in the country. However, over the last two decades, a slow but steady growth in writing programs and centers has happened. Ashoka University, which was one of the first that began this work, continues to be a significant voice and model in the expanding writing pedagogy movement in India.
Hiroshima University Writing Center, Hiroshima, Japan
The Hiroshima University (HU) Writing Center was established in 2013. Located inside the HU Library, it is operated by the library and the URA Division, Department of Research and Academia-Government-Community Collaboration. The center supports students in both Japanese and English academic writing.
Creating a Writing Center Community: CAPA (Academic Publishing Advisory Center), Curitiba, Brazil
CAPA (Academic Publishing Advisory Center, in Portuguese "Centro de Assessoria de Publicação Acadêmica") is the first true writing center in Brazil, founded in 2016 by Professor Ron Martinez. There is a need to talk about writing (even in Portuguese) since students feel pressured and have few opportunities to reflect upon their writing processes. Also, scholars and students in Brazil suffer from enormous pressure to publish articles in prestigious, high-impact journals, and this usually entails publishing in English -- a phenomenon related to the "internationalization of higher education". CAPA addresses both issues at once but It is for this latter reason that students and faculty alike seek out our writing center; if CAPA dealt with only the former, it is unlikely the writing center would reach as many people as it does.
Looking Forward: The Regional Writing Centre, University of Limerick, Ireland
As I wrote in ‘At the Centre of Changing Contexts: A Writing for Life Centre' (Cleary 2019, p.116), Irish law obligates our universities to be outward facing: “…we are a face looking in two directions simultaneously, back to a student’s life before matriculation and forward to the life the student faces when they leave.” Moving forward, we will continue to host a national essay-writing competition for secondary school students, engaging them in debates about social issues that are relevant to them as a way of preparing them for future civic engagement.
The English Writing Center at Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, China
The Zhejiang University English Writing Center (EWC) is affiliated with Zhejiang University, one of China’s top higher education institutions located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Unlike other EWCs, we have no peer tutors but three professor tutors regularly and a few professors just when-in-need. The language of engagement is English for English professor tutors, and both Chinese and English for Chinese professor tutors.
